… From my observations and experience as both a lawyer (when working alongside other lawyers and interacting with clients when providing legal advice) and an entrepreneur (when buying legal advice), I find that the exceptional lawyers are the ones who possess commercial savvy AND business nous.
They’re the ones who are able to give the commercial client a TRULY commercial legal service because they can empathise; some have actually stood in the clients’ shoes because they’ve ran a business themselves.
I recall Boss Lawyer returning to the fold one day after asking a client for some feedback in relation to the service he’d provided.
Whilst the client was in most part highly complimentary and positive in the feedback, being delighted with the technical legal advice received, the area identified for improvement was of a ‘non-legal’ nature… sort of.
The client actually said something along the lines of, ‘I’d like you to be more commercial’, as reported by Boss Lawyer Partner.
… Evidently, what law firm partners want in theory and practice from their junior lawyers – the mantras: ‘business nous’, ‘business acumen’ and ‘commercial savvy’, which are bandied around like candy-floss – cannot be learned from a text book, at law school or even in a law firm.
It is learned and developed on the ground by getting our hands dirty at the coal face.
I know, from experience…
As a business owner prior to entering the profession and from observing whilst a lawyer, it was patently obvious.
I also reckon there is a difference between commercial savvy and business nous/acumen, so I’m going to take a few moments to talk about both of them…
